Village Fish Market Who We Are
Village Fish Market The Village Fish Market has been a Sayville landmark for almost 50 years, originally owned and operated by the Klaassen brothers. During this time the Klaassen's mother, Nellie Klaassen, developed the famous coleslaw recipe the village of Sayville has grown to know and love. The two local fishermen hired Rose Leigh Manuell to help out in the store and to make chowder, fish cakes and their mother's coleslaw, which has now become locally famous as Rose's. Rose puts a lot of love into this tradition.
In 1972, after almost 20 years of operating a successful business, the brothers sold the Village Fish Market to Rose's son, James Leigh Manuell. Shortly after James bought the Market, he sold it to Charles Piffard in 1977. Charles quickly became known as Charlie and his Thursday, Friday and Saturday night fried fish dinners quickly became tradition in the village of Sayville. The store, however, remained closed on Sundays and Mondays until 2007. After Charlie's 30 years with the Village Fish Market, he sold the business to South Bay Seafood Co. Robert Sudano and Michael Gerlipp have been the proud owners of the Village Fish Market ever since, and now, over 40 years later, Rose Leigh Manuell is still making her famous Cole Slaw!!

In October of 2007, a complete renovation began. The kitchen was updated, the menu expanded, and the store was air-conditioned. Once completed, customers saw a makeover they had not seen since 1960. South shore locals to the very core, Bob and Mike were determined to keep the Village Market true to its heritage. The service counter where take-out dinners have been picked up for 48 years remains with the addition of an outside service window for convenience. All interior walls, light fixtures, and ceilings were replaced with a vintage inspired look and new tile floors were added to brighten up the atmosphere. The antique copper ceilings express the new owner's small town, hands-on approach in which they serve their customers. The original fish cases have been retired, however, the new display cases extend the entire length of the store and welcome a larger selection of prepared foods for today's customers.

Today, the Village Fish Market is open several days a week in the summer with an extensive menu for both take-out and to-stay dining. A full catering menu is also available for those special events at home.
